Glasses for Computers Users
The Vision Center specializes in the science of Computer Vision. We work closely with "Computer Environments", a new company dedicated to the well being of computer users. The unusual and often misunderstood problems associated with computers has shown the value of special glasses for computer users which help reduce eyestrain, headaches and general fatigue. We also utilize PRIO, an instrument for accurately measuring the focusing needs of the eyes when working with a computer.
Glasses that work well for general vision will often not work well on computers. Most bifocal glasses do not function well with computers. Often a unique pair of glasses is required for comfortable fatigue free vision on a computer.

There are several special lenses made that work better than ordinary lenses. These lenses allow clear vision from a close distance out to several feet away. Our optometrists will be able to suggest the right kind of computer glasses for you.
It will be helpful if you measure the distance from your eyes to the monitor screen before your eye examination. Bring this measurement with you to your exam.
Sunglasses
Sun-Clips- The new rage! Many prescription eyeglass frames now come with custom sun clips. These lightweight add-on clips usually have a standard gray or brown 80% absorption lens. There are even some that held on with tiny magnets. Please ask our opticians for the frames that either come with a clip or that has one made just for it. There is the possibility of manufacturing a custom sun clip.
Lens Color: The best color for your eyes is still gray. Brown is a very close second choice and is catching up quickly. The yellow lenses, sometimes called "blue blockers" are designed to cut through haze and enhance contrast. These are not true sunglasses as they often make objects appear brighter.
Polaroid - The fisherman's lens finally comes to the general public! These lenses are excellent at eliminating reflected glare. Polaroid blocks most horizontal reflected light. Examples are light bouncing off a sidewalk, a car, or especially, water or snow. Polaroid lenses have been available for many years, but were very expensive and were very heavy when made in prescription lenses. The weight came from the design where a thin piece of polaroid plastic was sandwiched between two pieces of glass. The only ones to get good use from these lenses were fishermen and some skiers. Now all this has changed. Polaroid sunglasses are made in lightweight plastic at a reasonable cost. The color is usually gray and the prescriptions are somewhat limited, but many people find this to be the most comfortable of all sunlenses. The lenses demonstrate very well. It is easy to see the effect of a good polaroid lens. Experience the comfort.

The newest Progressive lens from Varilux: Varilux Panamic is the newest progressive lens available. It is so technologically advanced it's the first option to provide people with natural vision. Because of its new Flexible Focus System, this new progressive lens gives you clear, crisp true vision no matter where you look (near, far and any vision in-between) so you see the world the way it is, comfortably and easily.
Hi Index and Polycarbonate: Thinner, Lighter, Stronger. All lenses have an Index of Refraction. This is the amount that light is bent (refracted) when going through the lens. It is based on the type of material, the curvature and the thickness of the lens. The higher the index of refraction, the thinner and flatter a lens can be made. The high index lens is over 40% thinner and lighter. Hi-Index lenses are therefore thinner, lighter and flatter than regular glass or plastic lenses. These new lenses have eliminated the old "coke bottle" glasses. The cost has come down as usage increased and these lenses are available in almost every imaginable prescription.
Polycarbonate lenses are designed from space-age technology. This type of plastic, which was used for jet fighter canopies and astronaut's helmets, is now available in eyeglass lenses. Polycarbonate has a very high index of refraction with all the benefits attributed to this trait and it is also incredibly strong. Children's glasses, safety glasses, various occupational glasses and many farsighted lenses are made from this wonderful material. In many cases it provides the thinnest and lightest lenses available.

Transitions III: The plastic photochromic lens get even better. Transitions plastic, high index or polycarbonate lenses respond to sunlight and darken automatically to absorb up to 80% of visible light. These lenses have been radically enhanced since their conception in the early 1990's. The colors change faster with excellent consistency, the range of color has increased, and now with the third generation, Transitions III, the gray and brown color integrity has been perfected. Now Transitions is available in XTRActive true gray color. This is an excellent option for those patients who spend a large amount of their time outdoors. This lens is 85% absorbent in daylight and 25% absorbent indoors. Transitions quickly respond to light conditions.
Anti-Reflection Coating: Anti-Reflection Coating allows more light to pass through the lens thus reducing glare and actually clearing vision. The coating supplied by The Vision Center is 10 layers thick. Our competitors often offer only a 1 layer coat. Your eyes look better and you see better.
